SPF Animals are produced by using hysterectomy-derived germ-free animals. The animals are housed in a barriered animal room, and kept under stringent control
according to the standard animal production system. Serological tests for specific pathogens are regularly performed.
¡°Cr¡± is an abbreviation for ¡°Division of Cancer Treatment, National Cancer Institute, U.S.A.¡±

SLC produced various kind of experimental animals according to the standard animal production system, and kept under stringent microbiological and genetic control. The animals are monitored regularly to maintain health conditions and characteristics..

Breeding System

  1. Closed colony: The animals are produced by random mating system.
  2. Inbred strain:

1) Foundation stock colony: This is the ¡°seed stock¡± of the strain. Brother to sister mating
inbreeds the pedigreed animals.

2) Multiplication colonies: The aim of these colonies is to produce breeding stocks for final
production of experimental animals. The breeding stock is provided by the foundation stock
colony. The pairing is brother to sister mating.

3) Production colonies: These colonies are only for production of experimental animals.
Random mating is used for animal production, rather than brother to sister mating.

  3. Hybrid strain: Mating between females and males of different inbred strain produces F1 hybrids.

Animal Husbandry

Japan SLC animals are maintained under the following conditions:

Room temperature 23~25¡É (except for rabbits: 20~24¡É)
Relative humidity 45~65%
Lighting cycle 12h light / 12h dark cycle
Ventilation rate 15 times/h, The air-pass through the HEPA filters. A pan-type air conditioning system is used as a air flow system.

Diet: Autoclaved rodent diets (Nihon Nosan Kogyo K.K.), and autoclaved and irradiated diets (PMI Feeds, Inc.) are available for SPF animals. Rodent diets (Nihon Nosan Kogyo K.K.) are available for ¡°clean conventional¡± animals.

Selected animals in each production facility are checked visually for possible abnormalities. Careful management and husbandry procedures are performed for each strain of animal. In addition, a monitoring report on each strain is recorded weekly to check production efficacy.

Microorganisms in the air of animal buildings are periodically tested. The drinking water for animals is periodically examined.
